Actor Sean Bean, is the one that brought this character to life. The only major difference between the character in the book and the television show is the hair. In the novels, Stark has a long mane of brown hair, whereas in the show Stark’s hair is only shoulder length.
Melisandre
The Red Woman, also known as Melisandre is one of the most mysterious characters on the show. She belongs to a secretive religion called R’hllor, which seems to worship flame and all things red. The books always described her as being garbed in a red robe, and with a large necklace on.
Actress Carice van Houten did an excellent job of embodying Melisandre, and performing all sorts of magical acts. One thing that her appearance lacked, were two glowing red eyes. The production team decided to leave her natural blue eyes, and just dye her hair a vibrant red.
Oberyn Martell
Westeros seemed to have a variety of princes, but none were quite as feisty as Prince Oberyn Martell of Dorne. Played by actor Pedro Pascal, who can now be seen on Disney’s The Mandalorian, he made sure that Oberyn was remembered as a heart throb.
Once more, the hair was changed for the screen. In the novels Oberyn sports a thick mane of hair, that makes him look like he belongs on the cover of a romance novel. In the show he had much shorter locks.
Margaery Tyrell
As far as queens of Westeros go, Margaery Tyrell definitely left her mark on King’s Landing. Actress Natalie Dormer brought this character to life, and managed to turn Margaery into a queen not to be trifled with.
In the books, Margaery was a brunette through and through, and that included a pair of brown eyes. On the show, she was transformed into a blue eyed blonde, which was closer to Dormer’s own coloring.
Khal Drogo
One of the shortest lived, yet most memorable characters on the show was Khal Drogo played by actor Jason Momoa. This is the role that made him the household name he is now. On the show, he played the leader of the Dothraki and Dany’s husband.
There are some key differences between the show Khal Drogo and the book Khal Drogo. The book version has a long braid with more decorations woven in, and a nice big mustache.
Petyr Baelish
Every good show has intrigue, and Petyr Baelish tended to be the character at the center of it all. As soon as a situation required any sort of cunning, Petyr or Littlefinger as he was known would be involved.
Aiden Gillen certainly made people believe he was the character, and played Petyr to perfection. In terms of appearance, the only thing the onscreen version lacked was a beard shaped like a triangle. This was an amazing casting choice.
Sir Bronn
Not every character on Game of Thrones is actually after a throne. Bronn was simply a sell sword who was looking for some quick cash, and eventually a nice cushy estate. Actor Jerome Flynn delivered all of his lines in the same insolent manner as the character in the book, and even grew out his hair to look more like the book Bronn.
The only thing that does not fit are Flynn’s naturally blue eyes, which were left for the show. In the book, they’re brown.
Catelyn Stark
Every clan needs a matriarch, and for the Starks theirs was Lady Catelyn Stark. Catelyn was Eddard’s wife, and the mother of Rob, Arya, Sansa, Bran, and Rickard. In the books, Catelyn is described as having a luscious mane of auburn hair, and a pair of ice blue eyes.
As you can see, actress Michelle Fairley had all of that. This was one of the best casting decisions the television team made, as Fairley didn’t have to change her own appearance that much.
Euron Greyjoy
Every family has a black sheep, and for the Greyjoy’s that is Euron Greyjoy. He is the uncle of Yara and Theon, and tries to steal the Iron Throne from the pair. In the book, Euron has an eye patch, long scruffy hair, and purple lips that appear to be bruised.
In the show, Euron looks relatively put together, and not like he has been in multiple fights. Actor Pilou Asbæk played the character well, but he should have looked a lot scruffier.
Bran Stark
One character who had a very unexpected rise to power was Bran Stark. It seems like he may not be around for subsequent seasons after he is pushed out of a window, but he is a character with staying power.
The book Bran is supposed to look like his mother Catelyn, and have auburn hair and piercing blue eyes. In the show, Bran just has brown hair and brown eyes, which is very different from how Martin imagined him.
Barristan Selmy
Every kingdom needs top fighters, and that was exactly what Barristan Selmy is – the top swordsman of Westeros. In the books Barristan is known for his striking blue glare, and his long white hair.
He is also incredibly muscular, which actor Ian McElhinney does not quite fit. With such big shoes, and an equally big suit or armor to fill McElhinney does look like the character, just a downsized version.
Robert Baratheon
Westeros has seen many kings come and go, but the first king that readers and viewers are introduced to is Robert Baratheon. He alongside his queen, Cersei Lannister rule in King’s Landing.
Mark Addy played Robert, and we have to admit this is one of the better casting decisions. Addy has the long beard, curly hair, and barrel like physique described in the book. All that needed to be changed was a slightly darker hair color.
Sansa Stark
Sansa Stark is a character that appears to be weak, and then comes into her own as a noble lady. In the books, Lady Sansa is portrayed as a lithe character, who has fiery hair, and bright blue eyes that many other lords find alluring.
Actress Sophie Turner opted to dye her hair red each season, and make sure that both readers and viewers got the Sansa they deserved. She was one of the most underestimated characters on the show.
Stannis Baratheon
In the clash of the kings, Stannis Baratheon appears to be one that might come out on top. He is supposed to strike fear in his opponents, and in the books he certainly did. This could have been due to his much younger physique as well.
In the show, he appears to be somewhere in his 40s or 40s, but in the books he was only in his 30s. We’re not sure why the casting team decided to age him so much.
Tywin Lannister
Every family of Westeros has a family member who is trying to steal power from another family. The Lannisters are all conniving, but besides Cersei, Tywin might be the one who would win a prize for it.
Actor Charles Dance fully embraced the character, but his appearance is not what was described in the book. Not only does he not have mutton chops, but he also has a full head of hair, which the book version did not.
Daario Naharis
You may not have noticed this, but there were actually two actors who played Daario Naharis, the many Dany had a fling with. The most recent version of Daario, was played by Michel Huisman who definitely did not look the part.
In the books, Daario was known for his dashing blue hair, and matching beaded beard. We can understand why the costume department didn’t adapt this look, it is a tad nautical for a show largely based on land.
Tormund Giantsbane
The wildlings are known for being crafty and able to survive past the safety of the Wall. Tormund Gianstbane is one of the bravest men in all of Westeros, and never shies away from a fight.
The actor Kristofer Hivju portrays Giantsbane as a fit ginger, when in the books he is anything but. In fact, the book version describes Giantsbane as being round and jolly, with a shock of white hair.
Joffrey Baratheon
If ever there was a character that audiences and readers were happy to say bye to, it was King Joffrey Baratheon. This young king was known for his wicked ways, and often cruel nature.
Actor Jack Gleeson played him to perfection, but his looks weren’t quite what Martin had in mind. In the books, Joffrey has long curly blonde hair, and sparkling green eyes whereas Gleeson has a blonde mop and light gray eyes.
Samwell Tarly
Oh Samwell, the sweetest character that ever lived in the land of Westeros. This young man, who is a member of the Night’s Watch didn’t know what he was getting himself into when he befriended John Snow.
The character is defined by his portly appearance, brown hair and beard, and matching eyes. He is literally the epitome of the character, and how he was described in the novels. This is the best casting to date, and it is all thanks to actor John Bradley!
Ser Jorah Mormont
Every queen needs her admirers, and Queen Daenerys had many. None was as faithful as Ser Jorah Mormont played by Iain Glen. Everything Dany needed, Jorah would give her, even his heart if she would take it.
One thing that Jorah is missing is the facial tattoo that made him so unique in the books. On top of that Glen still has most of his hair, when Jorah is supposed to be starting to bald.
Ramsay Bolton
Every family has some issues, but the kind of issues that Ramsay Bolton brings to his are on another level. Nobody would classify him as a kind individual and that shines through in every interaction he has with people. Iwan Rheon took on the character, and played him very convincingly.
One trend we have seen, is that the HBO production team prefers their stars to be clean shaven and not sport long locks. Those are the main differences between the onscreen Ramsay and book Ramsay.
Arya Stark
One thing that most of the onscreen characters share is their age. They are all significantly older than the characters in the books.
Arya Stark played by Maisie Williams is supposed to be in her early teens, not her twenties the way Williams is. That being said in terms of looks, Williams is a shoe-in for Arya. They share the same hair color, style, and eyes.
Jaime Lannister
Jaime Lannister, the famed slayer of the Mad King is an integral part of Westeros. Not only is he the father of the Baratheon children, but he is also Cersei’s brother.
Actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau was selected to play Jaime, and for the most part he looks like the character. The only thing that is different is his short hair, rather than the long blonde ringlets mentioned in the books.
Beric Dondarrion
A major element in the books, which was not really explored in the series was the theme of resurrection. Beric Dondarrion is constantly resurrected by seemingly unknown forces in the books.
Appearance-wise, both the book version and the onscreen version sport red hair, a dashing leather eyepatch, and a ginger tinted beard. This was one casting one right.
Davos Seaworth
Just like his name, Davos Seaworth is definitely seaworthy. As an old smuggler, he is asked to help out various parties in matters involving the high seas.
Actor Liam Cunningham plays the dashing seaman, but he is a tad on the older side compared to the book version. Once more, the casting team decided to age the character by casting Cunningham.
Lord Varys
Lord Varys, also known as ‘the Spider’ is a master weaver when it comes to webs of deceit. He knows everything that is going on in Westeros, and is able to find people to do his bidding wherever he goes.
Conleth Hill had no problem shaving his head, packing on a few extra pounds, and wearing robes to embrace this role. To make it even better, this is exactly what Varys looked like in the books.
Jon Snow
As one of the most important characters in the series, it was important that Jon Snow be cast well. When Kit Harrington auditioned for the role, the casting team knew they had found their Jon.
Harrington has the long wavy black hair Jon is known for, along with the muscular physique which makes him such a formidable foe in battles. This is a casting decision done right!
Theon Greyjoy
Some characters are terrifying on Game of Thrones, while others are more on the weak side. Theon Greyjoy, played by Alfie Allen was one character that nobody really loved. First he was pretty mean, and then he was simply weak. Eventually he redeemed himself, but he was never one of the characters that people raved about.
Theon experienced some pretty awful things while imprisoned by Ramsay Bolton, and due to this he was supposed to have a very gaunt appearance and grey hair. This did not quite translate to the character on screen, as Theon’s hair remained fluffy and brown.
Yara Greyjoy
While Theon may have been a fairly weak character, his sister is anything but. She embodies all that is fierce from the Iron Islands, and doesn’t let any many stand in the way of bringing glory to her clan.
In the books, Yara was named Asha, and she had short black hair do, and some rather elven features. On the show Yara is much more feminine, and actress Gemma Whelan did a good job of bringing her to life.
Brienne of Tarth
Brienne of Tarth played by actress Gwendolyn Christie is pretty striking in her own right. In the series, she was mocked by most of the characters for her spotty complexion, muscular build, and her chiseled jawline.
The HBO Brienne is much more feminine than the character from the series.
Eddison Tollett
As a member of the Night’s Watch with Jon Snow, Edison Tollett, played by Ben Crompton, is tasked with trying to keep Snow safe.
In the books, George R.R. Martin describes him as a man with grey hair, and a rather dour face. Crompton doesn’t exactly look like that, with his flowing brown locks and a face that tends to smile.
Ygritte
Ygritte is one of those characters that fans were very excited to see. Her fiery temper, and even fiery-er hair managed to capture the interest of Jon Snow.
Rose Leslie, the actress that brought Ygritte to life is a redhead, but she doesn’t have that ‘kissed by fire’ color of red that fans were expecting.
Tommen Baratheon
Tommen Baratheon is one of those characters that didn’t have the most illustrious of story arcs. In terms of his appearance, he was meant to have flowing blonde hair like all of the Lannisters and a slightly plump face.
Dean Charles-Chapman, the actor who played the teenage version of Tommen had neither long hair, nor a round face.
Syrio Forel
Every young lord and sometimes lady, needs a professional swordsman to teach them some skills. Syrio Forel, played by Miltos Yerolemou, definitely pulled out some great moves, but his appearance did not match the character in the book.
The main difference being his thick head of hair, where he should have been bald.
Gilly
One character that fans were completely happy with was young Gilly. As one of the Free Folk, she did not have an easy life, but her character really grew once she joined the rag tag Westeros folk.
Played by Hannah Murray, she possessed the long brunette hair described, and the wide brown eyes Martin wrote about.
Roose Bolton
Roose Bolton was one of those characters that was a bit of an enigma. In the books, he is described as having a clean shaven face, and a man of long dark straight hair.
Actor Michael McElhatton who portrayed the character was pretty different in comparison. He had short cropped hair, and some noticeable stubble.
Mance Rayder
As one of the leader’s of the Free Folk, Mance Rayder was a character with a lot of power. Martin wanted to make sure that readers knew Rayder was not a young man, which is why he described him as having long grey hair.
Actor Ciaran Hinds did not don a grey wig, instead he rocked his naturally brunette hair for the role.
Tyene Sand
Tyene Sand is one of the characters that was completely different in the books lookwise, compared to her onscreen depiction. Actress Rosabell Laurenti Sellers is known for her dark brown, almost black hair and piercing brown eyes.
In the novels, Sand is known for her pale blonde hair and light blue eyes. That is one character the show got completely wrong.
Hodor
Arguably, Hodor is one of the most important characters in the series. Originally, he was known as Walder, and then renamed as Hodor.
Looks wise, in the books, Hodor was a large man with long brunette hair. HBO once more switched it up, and cast Kristian Nairn in the important role, but allowed him to keep his short grey hair instead.
Brynden Tully
The Blackfish AKA Brynden Tully was one of the nights in the GOT universe that was actually respected.
Actor Clive Russell embodied the character, which was described as a tall man, who was quite thin with a whole lot of greying hair. Russell is all of these things, which means that casting was on point here.
Myrcella Baratheon
The young Myrcella Baratheon was a character that showed up a few times in the show, as she was the daughter of Cersei and her brother Jaime.
Actresses Nell Tiger Free and Aimee Richardson both took turns playing the character. Myrcella was characterized by the signature blonde Lannister curls, green eyes, and nubile features, all of which Tiger Free had.
Robb Stark
Robb Stark is one of the most beloved characters in GOT lore, but did actor Richard Madden live up to the role in terms of looks?
While he had the stocky build and attitude, he was not clean shaven and he had short hair. In the books, Robb had long auburn hair like his mother, and never rocked a beard.
Edmure Tully
Sometimes the casting was not as good as it could have been, and Edmure Tully is the perfect example of this. Actor Tobias
Menzies played the character well, but in the books he was supposed to be about a decade or two younger. All of the grey hair should have been replaced with darker auburn locks and a younger bearded visage.
Ellaria Sand
Every prince needs his princess, and for Prince Oberyn Martell, his unofficial princess was Ellaria Sand played by Indira Varma.
Ellaria was known for her exotic looks in the book, and appeal to men which Varma seems to have embodied well for this role. This is a casting done right as well!
Gendry Baratheon
Gendry Baratheon was one of the most mysterious characters at first, but it quickly became apparent that he had a famous father.
George R.R. Martin had envisioned a young man of stocky build, with a lot of flowing black hair. Actor Joe Dempsie isn’t exactly on the stocky side and he sported a buzz cut for most of the series.
Tyrion Lannister
As far as poor castings based on looks go, Tyrion Lannister, played by Peter Dinklage, has to be one of the worst.
In the books, Tyrion is known for a missing nose and heterochromia or two different colored eyes. All Dinklage sported was a scar on his face, which was far less scary looking than the books.
Cersei Lannister
The Iron Throne was the most coveted seat in Westeros, and Cersei Lannister was the last monarch to really sit on it.
Actress Lena Headey played the fierce queen, and she did sport a blonde wig and green eyes to match the character in the book. The only flaw was that she and Jaime did not exactly look like twins in the series.
Sandor Clegane
The Hound or Sandor Clegane was one of those characters that started out bad, but turned out to have a heart of gold.
Played by actor Rory McCann, Sandor is known for his impressive size, and McCann definitely brings the height to the role. However, his scarred face is not as bad as it was described in the books.
Viserys Targaryen
Viserys Targaryen was Daenerys’ brother, and like Dany, had long flowing white blonde hair.
This is in keeping with the books, and actor Harry Lloyd had to wear a wig for all of the scenes he shot. His hawkish features and lean appearance also fit with what Martin wanted for the role.
